Maternal Psychological Distress and Repeated Implantation Failure: A Mini Review

Infertile couples can try assisted reproductive technology (ART) interventions to become pregnant. Repeated implantation failure (RIF) is diagnosed when pregnancy is not achieved after three or more transfers of high-quality embryos. Despite the psychological research indicating that repeated ART failure is strongly associated with negative psychological consequences for both men and women, there are currently no studies addressing the potentially traumatic aspects of the experiences of RIF women. Thereby, we present a summary of the current research to emphasize the intersections between traumatic experiences and RIF, particularly the different features of RIF women in ART programs potentially more at risk for trauma. The aim of this study is to examine the role of psychological factors in RIF and to emphasize the need for further research to better understand these processes in ART treatments for women with RIF.
